Army Enlistment and Re-Enlistment Bonus InformationArmy Enlistment and Re-Enlistment Bonus InformationThere are two types of enlistment bonuses currently offered by the Active DutyArmy Enlistment bonuses for non-prior tafelgeschirr recruits and enlistment bonuses for prior service recruits who have been separated from the military for 91 or mora days. Those separated from the military for 90 days or less would use the regular re-enlistment bonus charts. Difference Between Enlistment Bonus and Re-Enlistment Bonus Now, there areRE-ENLISTMENTbonuses that military enlisted personnel is offered atthe end of their previous enlistment time is coming to a close. These re-enlistment bonuses also depend on the service members rank, rate orMOS, and the needs of the military for keeping certain qualifications. If you have a critically needed skill, your re-enlistment bonus could be significant. Enlistment Bonuses Available Non-Prior tafelgeschirr enlistment bonusamounts are based on the M OS (job) and the number of years one is enlisting for. If you are a recruit about the join the military and have highly sought after skills or qualify for challenging jobs within the military (nuclear, special ops, linguist, medical, etc), you could also be eligible for an enlistment bonus or a signing bonus just for joining the military. Some of these one-time special bonuses can be as high as $40,000. Quick Ship Bonuses For Recruits There are also bonuses for those recruits who are ready to go to basic training immediately and can ship within 30days.These bonuses range from $8,000 to $20,000 depending on the urgency of filling a critical needs position in training and how quickly you are able to depart civilian life for boot camp. The U.S. Army has certain recruitment goals that it sometimes struggles to meet. This was the case in 2007 when it introduced the quick ship bonus. The program became effective in July of that year and it is still in effect. More than 3,800 recruits signed up within the first three weeks, and more than 4,100 had enlisted by August 23. Clearly, there must be something attractive about it. The quick ship bonus is available for qualified recruits in select Military Occupational Specialties - military jobs. They must enlist for at least two years and agree to report for basic training within 30 days. Bonus levels have been seasonal or graduated since September 2007 $20,000, $15,000 or $6,000, depending on the selected MOS. Quick Ship 31-60 Days The bonus is $3,000 for recruits who report within 31 to 60 days. All eligible recruits must have high school diplomas and must score at least a 50 on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery, known as the ASVAB. The MOS must also be listed as eligible for a seasonal bonus in the Army recruiting computer system. This bonus may be combined with other enlistment incentives, such as an enlistment bonus with a quick ship bonus, but the maximum total combined bonus amount that any one person can receive is capped at $40,000. Not all Army jobs offer enlistment bonuses. Payment of Bonuses Recruits who enlist for cash bonuses totaling more than $10,000 will receive their anfangsbuchstabe payment of $10,000 upon successful completion of initial entry training - basic training and job training. The remaining bonus amount will be paid in annual increments of up to $10,000 a year until the bonus is paid in full. Enlistment bonuses totaling less than $10,000 are paid in one lump sum upon successful completion of initial entry training. Prior Service enlistment bonusamounts are based on the following standards1 -MOS (job),2 - Time in Service3 - Re-enlistment zone multiplier4 - Rank of individual5 - Years individual is re-enlisting If a prior service member qualifies for re-enlistment with a certain set of skills the military needs, he/she could qualify for a bonus if they join for a new enlistment contract. An example of this process occurring is explained below The amount of bonus depends on the Multiplier assigned to the MOS, the individuals rank, the members time in service, and the number of years the individual re-enlists for. In some cases, the bonus multiplier also depends on where the individual is stationed. The Bonus Zone is simply the amount of time the person has been in the military Zone A Soldiers who re-enlist with between 17 months and 6 years of service. Zone B Soldiers, who - at the time of re-enlistment - have between 6 years and 10 years of service. Zone C Soldiers who re-enlist with between 10 and 14 years of service. The formula to compute the bonus amount is (BONUS MULTIPLIER) X (MONTHLY BASE PAY) X (NUMBER OF YEARS RE-ENLISTING FOR) Bonuses are paid in Lump Sum, at the time of re-enlistment. Member must have been separated for more than 90 days, but less than 4 years. Soldiers must reenlist for three years (at least) Soldiers with broken service selective reenlistment bonus program will reenter on active duty in grades E-4 t hrough E-6 depending upon qualifications and vacancies - in other words, the needs of the Army. A Career in the Army The National Defense Authorization Bill of 2017 required that the U.S. Army beef up its ranks by 16,000 soldiers by September 30, 2017, so its unlikely that the quick ship bonus will be eliminated anytime soon. The U.S. Army Recruiting Command has earmarked $300 million for various enlistment bonuses. Although basic pay is not known for being generous, the Army offers several perks to compensate, including cost of living allowances, superior health care, tuition assistance, and, of course, a variety of bonuses and special pay for certain skills and duties. Pay grades increase as you move up in rank. You can specialize in any one of numerous fields, including military intelligence, electronics, field artillery or communications. And remember - the quick ship bonus is based on a two-year enlistment, so you dont necessarily have to spend the rest of your life in th e Army to collect it.

Why you should allow yourself to indulge during the holidays

Why you should allow yurself to indulge during the holidaysWhy you should allow yourself to indulge during the holidaysIts the most wonderful time of the year. The chill in the air perpetually smells like snow, carols are playing on repeat through every set of speakers and your home couldnt be mora full of smiling faces of people you love. Oh, and every type of food and drink that comes your way is more decadent than the last. Its a tough life, right?Well, if youre working on certain nutrition, fitness and weight management goals, it can be. Temptation lurks behind every corner of those decked-out gingerbread houses, and each morsel of sugar leaves you jonesing for your next hit. Even your adult beverages get a caloric upgrade when the time comes to bust out the eggnog and Rumchata. How are you supposed to hit your targets and enjoy the holidays to the fullest at the same time? The short answer Youre not.The holidays are not a diet-approved time of the year. The vast majority of peopl e dont derive joy from finding ways to cut the most calories out of their holiday dishes or waking up at 3 a.m. just to cram in an extra 30 minutes on the treadmill in an attempt to even the scales. And none of your relatives want to hear you whimper about this struggle as they try to enjoy the treats and festivities they only get to indulge in once a year themselves. Its exhausting, its stressful, and it can honestly ruin the experience for everyone. So, during this time, which is really only a span of a couple weeks at most, shift your priorities a little bit. Instead of crunching calorie numbers and watching the number on that bathroom scale like its a Santa Claus GPS, let it go. Look up and focus on all of the wonderful people with whom you get to share this magical time of year. Treat the season of indulgence as the celebration of life and love and hope its meant to be. And enjoy every last crumb of those frosted Christmas cookies while you can.We spend so much of our lives sear ching for a sense of balance, but what we often forget is that balance isnt achieved in a single moment in time. You dont have to struggle to tiptoe along a tightrope every second of every day. Instead, consider how the summary of your time looks and what kind of average they create. If, at the end of the year, you stuck to your health-minded goals 80 percent of the time and lived life to the fullest with all of the indulgences this beautiful world can offer in the remaining 20 percent of the time, wed say youre 100 percent on course. With this mindset, youll be able to breathe a little easier throughout the holidays, endure a lot fewer stress-induced stomachaches and appreciate the present moment for all the ways its enhancing your life. And then, once the fireplace is no longer roaring and the sugar plum fairies have faded from your daydreams, you can shift back to the goals you want to work on - and kick some serious ass. This article was originally published on Swirled.

Tips for Successfully Returning to the Workforce

Tips for Successfully Returning to the WorkforceTips for Successfully Returning to the WorkforceThe thought might occur as your youngest child mounts the school bus for kindergarten. Or when they enter middle school, or maybe even high school. At some point, though if you are one of the 11 million U.S. parents who decided to down ramp from their professional career path in order to be a stay-at-home parent youll fruchtweinly likely find yourself wondering if its time to return to the workforce. And with that thought will come a lot of questions about what you should do to prepare for this transition. According to a 2016 Pew Research Center study, the percentage of parents who chose to stay at home with their young children remained constant between 1989 and 2016, at 18%. What had changed was the percentage of fathers who decided to step back from their careers in order to focus upon their families the number of stay-at-home dads rose from 4% to 7%, while the percentage of stay-at-h ome moms fell slightly, from 28% to 27%. Tips for Successfully Returning to the Workforce Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a stay-at-home dad, if you are contemplating a return to the workforce, there are steps you can take to make your career search successful. Get Back in the Game and Network The longer the length of time you have spent away from the workforce, the more important it is that you reacquaint yourself with your industry, analyze the current job market, and re-forge connections with former colleagues and other professional contacts. One of your best resources at this stage of preparation is the professional social media networking site, LinkedIn. Not only does LinkedIn allow professionals to network, but it is also a great source for gauging the job market and learning about new industry developments. If you already have a LinkedIn account, the professional information you once shared there is no doubt due for a makeover, especially your resume (which may need to be redesigned to downplay your employment gap and better speak to rising job opportunities). If you dont have a LinkedIn account, now is the time to create one. Be koranvers to develop your professional network, reaching out to former colleagues and to professional groups you may once have belonged to in order to let people know that you are returning to the game and are available for interviews. You should also reach out to your former boss and supportive co-workers, assuming you left their organization on good terms. Invite them to meet with you informally for coffee or lunch, explaining that you would welcome their advice as you transition back into the workforce. This will also allow you to catch up the companys news, get updated about changes in the industry, and learn about any current hiring initiatives you might be interested in pursuing. Retrain and Hone Your Job Skills When on-ramping back into the workforce, you will need to be able to demonstrate to employers that, despite your gap in employment, you nonetheless possess the skills that would make you a desirable employee. Ugrade your skills. Before you even begin to update your resume, its good to recognize areas where you may need to improve upon your previous job skills or even develop new ones (especially if you are in a tech-dependent profession or if you are considering a complete career change to a different industry). Review job postings. One way to pinpoint areas for improvement is to review job announcements youre interested in on career search sites such as Indeed.com or Glassdoor.com. Analyze the minimum qualifications and preferred qualifications sought in these ads to landsee how your own knowledge, hard skills, and soft skills stack up. Get training. If there are commonly-requested skills you either dont have or feel have rusted during your time away from the workforce, consider pursuing additional training in these areas. Find Ways to Remedy Your Professional Gap As you are getting back up to speed, another excellent way to re-hone your job skills is to look for freelance or contract work. In todays economy, many companies are open to the idea of contract workers, especially for big projects or to help launch new initiatives. Take on some contract work or part-time gigs. Not only will pursuing part-time work enable you to refresh your professional knowledge, but theres also always the chance that a part-time gig might turn into a full-time, benefited position. List recent training. Being able to describe recent skills training and / or relevant part-time experience on your resume will make a huge difference in defusing the red flag that is raised when hiring managers see an employment gap on your resume. Volunteering counts as work. You can alsouse volunteer work to help fill your professional gap. To do so, keep a detailed list of the projects you have worked on with your schools PTA, school fundraisers, your church, or charitable organization s. Make a special note if you were in a leadership role like a large event or project. This is valuable information that can help to offset professional gaps. Heres how to include volunteer work on your resume. How to Manage the Gap on Your Resume The reverse-chronological format that works for job candidates without significant professional employment gaps often isnt the best approach to take when crafting a resume following an extended absence from the workforce. Neither do you want to describe your most recent experience in cutesy language such as Jones Family CEO. Dont try to masquerade parenting as professional experience. Begin your resume with a summary. Instead of including a chronological listing of your work history, begin your resume with a summary of qualifications that showcases your skills that are most relevant to the position you seek. If you have a degree or recent training in your career field, place this section after the qualifications profile (providing date s for recent training but omitting early college graduation dates). Highlight your most relevant skills. Then, in a functional resume format or better yet a combination resume, highlight activities and skills both from your early career history and from your time away from work in themed sections relevant to the job youre applying for (examples include Customer Service Experience or Event Coordination Experience or Communications Experience). Use length of employment. Finally, at the end of your resume, describe your actual employment history, in reverse-chronological order (if this experience occurred more than ten years ago, however, substitute the dates of employment with the length of employment five years instead of 1990 to 1995). Review an example of a resume for a stay-at-home parent returning to the workplace. Submit a Cover Letter That Shows You Did Your Homework Your titelbild letter should be designed to grab the attention of hiring managers and entice them to give your resume their serious attention. Its also a valuable tool for parents seeking to return to work because it provides the opportunity to showcase your talents. Focus on the employer and the job. As you write your cover letter, keep the focus on the employer dont be tempted to give a long defense about your absence from the work force. Instead, you want to emphasize why youre interested in their company, what skills you have that would make their organization more successful, and your specific accomplishments. Be sure your cover letter is top-notch. Check and then re-check the grammar and spelling. Also, try to find the name of the companys recruiter or HR manager to personalize the letter. This shows that you have taken the initiative to research their organization. Briefly mention the gap. While you shouldnt dwell on your employment gap in your cover letter, its a good strategy to allude to it briefly, since hiring managers will sense, from the format of your resume, that you a re downplaying your dates of employment. Keep your allusion simple and straightforward in the final paragraph of your letter, provide a statement like Having taken a break from full-time employment in order to care for my family, I am now eager to return the sort of stimulating and rewarding workplace your company offers. Expand Address the Gap During Interviews During phone interviews and face-to-face interviews, should the subject come up, acknowledge your employment gap in a similarly matter-of-fact-way. You could say something like You may have noticed a gap on my resume. After the birth of my second child, I made the decision to stay home with my children. Im the type of person who puts 150% into everything I do. At that point, I felt that those efforts were best focused on my family. Now that my children are older, Im at a point where Im once again able to commit 150% to an employer. Id like to discuss some of my past successes and achievements, both from my previous work h istory and my time out of the workforce. ExpandBe confident when making these statements and the interviewer will have confidence in you as well. Remember that, as a stay-at-home parent, youve gained a maturity and demonstrated a level of personal dedication and commitment that will transfer beautifully to your new workplace. How to Make Your Return to Work a Success START NETWORKING Reconnect to former employers and colleagues, and start expanding your professional network on social media sites like LinkedIn.SHARPEN YOUR JOB SKILLS Identify which of your job skills are rusty and seek out training and part-time employment opportunities to sharpen them.BE CONFIDENT AND POSITIVE Any employer worth working for understands that life happens and that sometimes family must come first. As you rewrite your resume, list all of the great hard and soft skills you can offer a company. This should give you the confidence you need to take this exciting next step.

Employee Engagement Starts with Compensation

Employee Engagement Starts with CompensationEmployee Engagement Starts with CompensationMoney, in the form of salary and benefits, could be standing in the way of your efforts to produce a more engaged workforce.Reasonable salaries and thoughtful benefits must be the foundation of any employee engagement program. Without this footing, employees are automatically distracted.Consider that the salary negotiation process is often the first time a potential employee expresses zu sich basic terms for being successful in the new role. A bruising pre-employee salary negation takes a long time to heal. On the other hand, a thoughtful counter-offer could also reveal engagement opportunities, deliver clarity around the job description and set a clear path for career growth. Some companies have gone as far as taking money off the table thus making salary a non-issue by paying employees what they want to be paid and putting in place benefits and rewards that drive engagement. To ensure money issu es doesnt prevent employee engagement, lets unravel the compensation and engagement knot. The Twisted Relationship between Money and EngagementAfter several years of salary and benefits being frozen, cut and rigidly defined, employers are starting to refocus on the role money plays in facilitating engagement. Dan Simovic, chief executive of TAMS (Talent Assessment and Management Services) Group reports that many of his recent projects focus on salary and rewards programs. For these employers salary is not just an attraction and retention tool, its also an engagement tool.During the most recent recession, some companies financially fortified themselves but neglected the implications on engagement. For instance, many organizations that rapidly grew through merger and acquisition activity were focused on delivering bottom-line results, thus delaying investments in culture and systems integrations. Years after the deals were inked, commission and bonus structures, titles and job descript ions and career pathways still have not been aligned.TAMS Group is working with several such companies that finally realized that the administrative burden of managing multiple pay scales, governance systems and naming conventions were only part of the problem. What drove management to take action welches that the conflicting messages sent to employees hamper engagement and are a huge distraction that reduce productivity, said Simovic. This is a major shift. In leaner times engagement was viewed as a cheap way to replace the salary and benefits they were cutting. Somewhere employers got the idea that if people were happy at work, they wouldnt need to be paid more, Sean Williams, owner of Communication AMMO said. This was the era when managers were prompted to smile more, thank their employees and institute other free methods that ostensibly drove engagement by making the workplace a more pleasant environment.Creative and Responsive RewardsBeyond salary, employers and employees alike have come to recognize that total rewards deliver lifestyle benefits that fuel engagement by providing some relief from the pain-points that cause employees to miss work or be distracted. During salary negotiations, recruiter Simovic has noticed an increase in requests for flex time, work-from-home arrangements and other special scheduling considerations.Taking it a step further to the companys entire workforce, responsive benefits empower employees to adapt the program to their preferences. For instance, in one location, employees might select wellness benefits that include discounted fitness center memberships. In another it might take the form of free healthy snacks in the break room.Involving employees in making decisions about their work environment and perks creates a sense of ownership and also ensures the benefits are appreciated, said Jesse Lahey, managing principal of Aspendale Communications. The combined product of such an effort is increased engagement.Beyond benefits, e mployees are demanding more transparency about their individual career paths. During pre-employment negotiations and after some time on the job, employees are asking for clarity about their career trajectory and want to be given goals that ensure continuous learning and growth, reports HR expert Simovic. While not traditionally considered a benefit, clear-cut career path is an incentive that is valued by employees. Also appreciated by employees is a commitment to their education and development. Where coaching was previously used as a step toward firing a problem employee, now employers and employees alike view coaching as a strong signal that the company is appreciative of the employee, is investing in her and wants to see her succeed, said Simovic. Coaching is no longer a response to a crisis, but a proactive investment in a leader.Money Alone Wont Cure Engagement IssuesAbove average pay and benefits arent replacements for other engagement activities, although some companies have t ried to take this shortcut. Employee engagement expert Lahey has seen companies with the cash to do so attempting to throw salaries and bonuses at their engagement problems. While this phenomena might sound attractive on the surface, its likely that the corporate culture is so damaged in these scenarios that no amount of money is enough to make people feel good or work harder.Think of benefits and compensation as a foundation for engagement they are necessary for a strong relationship between employer and employee. Although theyre not a cure-all, organizations would be wise to address compensation and benefits as part of any employee engagement effort. If you want to learn more about achieving authentic and lasting engagement, start by building your leadership credibility. How to Quit Your Job The Right Way If you are reading this, you probably need to find a new job. Or perhaps youve already scored a great new gig and are now plotting your grand exit. But no matter how long youve dreamed of storming into your bosss office and quitting in a blaze of anger, its important to leave your fleck gracefully.Thats why were here to offer five ways to quit your job with no regrets1. Give Much MoreThan Two Weeks NoticeIts common courtesy to give two weeks notice before leaving a job. However, if youre looking to maintain great relationships, consider giving much more notice before your departure, and consider offering to help hire and train your replacement. This will demonstrate that you arent making a mad dash for the door and that you truly care about the well-being of the company. This will also quell the grumbling of coworkers who are normally forced to pick up the slack following a gruppe members departure. When you do give notice, make sure to inform your boss and human resources before telling anyone else yes, even before your work BFF or work spouse so that they dont find out through the rumor mill first.2. Before you bid farewell, make sure to go out of your way to express genuine appreciation for the experiences and opportunities that company afforded you.If you had an all-around terrible experience (and youre leaving, so you may have), focus on just one or two things for which you can genuinely feel grateful.A great way to do this would be by writing a handwritten thank-you letter, which has been found to bemuch more effective than email. You might even consider bringing in a small parting gift for the whole office on your last day. Bagels, anyone?4. Start Clearing Out EarlyYouve said your farewells and youre excited to leave as early as possible on your last day. Maybe you have happy hour plans with those coworkers youre leaving behind. But wait you have how many months of work files to organize and store? And saving everything you need from your work computer is goi ng to take how long? There are inevitably a thousand small things to do before you can leave a workplace behind forever. Dont leave yourself scrambling to clear out on your last day. Start this process up to a full week before you leave. This means more than cleaning out the picture frames and succulents on your desk. Make sure to send yourself important files or documents (without violating confidentiality, of course) while you have access to them. For future job interviews, reviewing these will prove invaluable in order to speak about previous work accomplishments.5. Make Sure You Know Why Youre QuittingMaybe youre leaving because youre ready to move to the next level in your career. But if youre quitting because you are unhappy, make sure that your problem is with the specific position and company, and not the industry or career path.Consider taking an aptitude test to verify that you are in the right line of work. Social Media and Your Job Search Employers Want In

Social Media and Your Job Search Employers Want InSocial Media and Your Job Search Employers Want InAccording to a very creepy article from Time.com, some employers and colleges are now insisting applicants give them access to their facebook incprofiles as part of the screening process. While we dont think this is a wide-spread phenomenon, employers have increasingly been screening candidates using social media, and now 91 percent of employers admit to using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to screen job candidates. But from the sound of this article, some employers are taking this practice one disturbing step further. What if, instead of viewing only what they could access publicly, employers required that you either sign into your Facebook account during a job interview, or friend them so they can view your whole profile? The Maryland Department of Corrections is one employer requiring job candidates to log into their accounts during interviews, showing them wall posts, pictures, and with whom theyre friends. If youre a job seeker, what would you do in this situation? Do you think its alright for employers to ask you to show them your profile? What would you say if you didnt want to comply? If youre an employer, would you ever ask this of a job interviewee? What are the benefits of this information, and are there other, less intrusive ways of getting the same type of information through the question and answer process? If you want to make sure your social media activities are in tip-top shape before you go searching for jobs, these articles offer great tipsHow to Make Facebook Private During a Job Search4 Ways to use Social Media in a Job SearchInfographic Job Seekers Use Social Media to Get HiredQuick Guide to Networking and Job Searching on LinkedIn4 Ways to Use Pinterest for Job Search and Work InspirationHow to Use Twitter in Your Job Search

Reference Request Rejection Letter Samples

Reference Request Rejection Letter SamplesReference Request Rejection Letter SamplesHave you recently been asked to write areference letterfor a colleague or acquaintance? For various reasons, you might need to decline. The challenge then is to do so with thought and tact. The first thing to understand is that there are all sorts of very good reasons for declining to write a reference. Its possible that you dont know the person well enough towrite a detailed letter. You may have had experiences with the person that leads you to believe that the position they are seeking would not be a good fit. You might not know enough about the position to be able to offer a strong endorsement for the candidate. It may be that you just dont have the time to spend writing a well-thought-out reference. Whatever your reason, if you cant write a positive reference that will help your contact make a good impression on the hiring manager, its best if you say no. Some Tips for Declining a Reference Req uest Dont wait. When you need to decline a request for a recommendation, try to do so as promptly as possible. It might be tempting to put it off no one likes having to let someone down. But delaying is crueler than responding promptly, even if they dont like what you have to say. You should give the person as much time as possible toline up alternative referencesif you cant provide one.Be gracious. Its better to decline the request than to write a lukewarm endorsement, but that doesnt mean that you have to be rude or overly critical in your response. Its perfectly reasonable for them to ask you to write a reference its perfectly reasonable for you to refuse. Theres no need to make the interaction mora negative than it needs to be. Besides, most industries are a small world. You never know when you might run into them again someday at a future job. Be positive. If you can, include some positive feedback. Offer to help in another way perhaps you can offer somejob search advice for the ir target industry, or recommend a mutual acquaintance who would be a more appropriate person to endorse them.Keep it short. The message you need to convey is short for a given reason, youll be unable to give a reference and the letter should be, as well. A few paragraphs are more than enough to convey what you need to say.Review sample letters for declining a reference request, but be sure to customize your letter for the situation. Undergraduate Economic Diversity

Undergraduate Economic Diversity Undergraduate Economic Diversity U.S. News World Report recently released a new ranking scale to add to their annual repertoire; this one showcasing the nation's most and least economically diverse universities. The scale was created to highlight which universities are making a concerted effort to recruit low-income students, based on the number of current students who receive Pell Grants. While U.S. News admits this is an imperfect system, short of asking for family tax statements it is currently the most reliable method available to evaluate socioeconomic diversity based on numbers. Here are the Top 10 Most Economically Diverse Universities:University of La Verne Jackson State University South Carolina State University Florida AM University Tennessee State University University of Texas at El Paso University of Southern Mississippi Texas AM University at Commerce Polytechnic Institute of New York University Utah State UniversityAs you can see, there is a stark drop in the highly diverse outliers (University of L a Verne in California is No. 1 with 89 percent of its students receiving the grants) and the mean and median percentages. Of the more than 200 schools ranked, only six have more than 50 percent, and from there the numbers taper off pretty quickly. As for the nation's top 25 programs, California takes honors, with three of the four most diverse undergraduate universities within the borders of the Golden State. But where are the top schools from U.S. News's Best Colleges ranking? Further dissecting the statistics, U.S. News plucked out the top-25 national universities, and ranked them again using the economic diversity scale. Below are those Top 10:(To see a more complete list of the economic diversity rankings of top colleges and universities, check out TaxProf Blog, from which this image is taken. The post also includes a table of the top liberal arts colleges' economic diversity rank.)As for the nation's most prestigious programs, California again takes the cakethe top two hai l the University of California system (UCLA with 35 percent and UC Berkeley with 32)with Columbia a distant third at 17 percent. California must be doing something right.Posted by Megan Cassidy

MRI-Safe Robots Treat Epilepsy

MRI-Safe Robots Treat Epilepsy MRI-Safe Robots Treat Epilepsy MRI-Safe Robots Treat Epilepsy Epilepsy affects one in 100 people globally and is most commonly treated with anti-seizure medicine or invasive surgery. Eric Barth, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, would like to change that. Those drugs have the possibility of being debilitating mentally, he says. Ph.D. candidate David Comber, left, and Associate Professor Eric Barth with a robotic device they developed to help treat epilepsy. Image: Vanderbilt University The surgery to treat the condition also has its own risks. Beginning at the base of the skull, neurosurgeons probe through nerves until they reach the hippocampus. For about 70 percent of seizures, it comes from neural instability, so when you treat epilepsy surgically, they remove the hippocampus part of the brain, Barth says. You figure out whether its the right or left part [causing the seizures] and its an invasive surgery where you drill a hole in the side of the skull. Recovery time alone with this surgery can be a couple months. We wanted to find a way to avoid it. The solution Barths team came up with was to go through the patients cheek, using a robot-assisted surgical procedure. For You: This Years Top 5 Innovative Medical Technologies Once inside the patients cheek, their procedure involves locating a structure called the foramen ovale and sneaking up to the brain with a steerable needle under MRI guidance, he says. We want to see where the needle is going under the image and guide that needle to the middle of the hippocampus. Then you heat the end of the needle up, he says. That way, instead if removing the hippocampus, you try to treat the patient through heating. The procedure is guided by MRI, so the team needed to design a robot that was MRI compatible. Likewise, to have a robot inside the scanner with you, that robot cant be made out of metals and motors and certain sensors. Because of this, we made our robot all out of plastic. Prof. Eric Barth, Vanderbilt University For MRI, they ask you to remove everything thats metal because the magnetic fields are huge and you cant have anything metallic in there because it can obscure the image, he says. Likewise, to have a robot inside the scanner with you, that robot cant be made out of metals and motors and certain sensors. Because of this, we made our robot all out of plastic and it uses these inflatable bellows where you control it with air. You use this robot to steer the needle into the hippocampus and go to the back end of it as they steer. Then you can see everything on the scanner. The robot is shaped like two toilet paper roll-sized objects. One rotates a needle helicallya corkscrew-style way inand the second needle is in back. The researchers have verified that the robot doesnt interfere with the scanner and that theres accurate placement with the needle, he says. In addition, Will Grissom, assistant professor in biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt, has developed techniques in scanning protocols in order to image the needle with the MRI. We see the needle as it comes in and, as you retract the needle, you stick something out of the end of it called the ablater, and you use laser energy and heat up that tissue, Grissom says. Surgery as its done now can lead to patients possibly having to learn to talk again. We really hope our way can give them an easier option. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Different Animal Rescue Career Options

Different Animal Rescue Career Options Different Animal Rescue Career Options There are many career paths available for those concerned with animal rescue and animal welfare. Here are a few of the most popular options: Animal Welfare Veterinarian Animal welfare veterinarians are board-certified specialists who have advanced training in animal welfare and ethics. Animal welfare has only been a specialty in the United States since 2012, with the first diplomates recognized as charter members in 2012 and the first certification exam administered in 2013. The average salary for veterinarians is approximately $86,712 per year, though board-certified specialists can earn well over $120,000 per year due to their advanced training and professional qualifications. Animal Shelter Manager Animal shelter managers oversee the animals, staff, and maintenance at the facility that they supervise.  Shelter managers seek funding, develop procedures, interact with the public, and represent the shelter at community events. Shelters tend to prefer managers with a degree in business administration or an animal-related field. Compensation for animal shelter manager positions ranges from $39,000 to $55,000 per year. Pet Adoption Counselor Pet adoption counselors screen adoption applicants, process applications, and supervise interactions between pets and the public. While a college degree is not required to secure a position in this field, most pet adoption counselors have extensive experience working with companion animal species. The average salary for pet adoption counselors is $23,630  per year. Humane Educator Humane educators provide information about animal welfare and behavior. Educators present a variety of educational programs to school groups, businesses, and other area organizations. They may also be involved with educating pet adopters about how to care for their new animals. Humane educators usually have a degree in education or a related field, though this is not always required. Certification programs are also available through the Humane Society of the United States.  The average salary for humane educators is  $32,147 per year. Animal Control Officer Animal control officers capture stray animals, investigate cases of animal mistreatment, enforce licensing regulations, and provide care to animals in their custody. This position allows for a high level of direct contact with animals, so it is critical that officers take all proper safety precautions to minimize the chance of injury. A degree in an animal-related field or criminology is preferred for officers, though a high school diploma or GED may be sufficient. There are several certification program options. A strong knowledge of animal behavior and first aid is critical for those seeking a position in this field.  The salary for animal control officers averages between $25,000 and $42,000 per  year. Wildlife Rehabilitator Wildlife rehabilitators provide care to injured native wildlife with the long-range goal of returning rehabilitated animals to the wild if at all possible. Rehabilitators must be licensed to work in their home state and obtain all necessary permits required by law. Professional certification is also available. The salary for wildlife rehabilitators is about $21,010. Animal Lawyer Animal lawyers may be involved with a variety of cases that may involve defining legal protections for animals and their welfare. Lawyers must complete graduate training to earn their Juris Doctor degree, plus they must successfully pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice in their home state. The average starting salary for a new animal lawyer is  around $50,000. Many lawyers practice in the private sector and incorporate animal law into their practice. In this case, the pay scale is based on salaries at the private firms - and vary depending on the size of the firm, and the location. Animal-Related Jobs Individuals who are interested in pursuing animal rescue and welfare career paths may benefit from volunteer work with shelters, humane societies, wildlife rehabilitation programs, breed rescues, and other similar organizations. Completion of formal internships may also be of particular value, especially wildlife rehabilitation and animal behavior internship program options.

Pottery Barn launching collection based on Friends episode

Pottery Barn launching collection based on Friends episode Pottery Barn launching collection based on Friends episode “She hates Pottery Barn?!” these were the emphatic words of whiny Ross Gellar of Friends when he found out his close friend was not a fan of the mass-produced furniture factory that has been a signature of the yuppie class abode for the last 20 years. Though many of us often didn’t side with Ross (they were not on a break!) it was hard to believe that someone could hate such a popular brand with such affordable prices for oversized throw pillows. In arguably one of the best episodes of the hit show, Rachel comes to a head with the aforementioned Phoebe as she tries to decorate their apartment only to realize her roommate doesn’t want anything that isn’t completely authentic, as in not from Pottery Barn. As you can guess, hilarity ensues. Rachel lies and tells Phoebe that she bought the apothecary tab;e (oh if only it cost “one and fifty dollars,”) a birdcage, a partition and several other knickknacks   at a flea market and even goes so far as to incorrectly describe the eras all these items are from (“It’s from yore - like, the days of yore,” and then when asked by Ross if there are any other decades she cites, “Well there’s yesteryear.” Does anyone know what yesteryear is?”)Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The episode titled  Ã¢€œThe One with the Apothecary Table,” which aired in 2000, garnered some criticism for its use of product placement though Pottery Barn wasn’t complaining as the must-see program saw the company’s “phones light up with catalog requests every time it airs in syndication, ” a former executive told The LA Times. This could be why almost 20 years later Pottery Barn is launching a collection based on that very episode on July 30. Because as we know, Friends  is not just a television show, it’s a lifestyle. And thanks to Netflix (though not for much longer) as well as various networks, the rerun s of the show and their furniture choices will live on forever. The  14-piece product line will arrive right before the show’s (gasp!) 25th anniversary. And yes, the apothecary table, which was perfect for holding Rachel’s 300 CDs (so tablets now I guess? Or whatever the robots are using to steal our thoughts) is part of the collection as are Central Perk mugs and throw pillows. It isn’t clear if couches will be a part of this collection but if they are you know there will be several reenactments of the “PIVOT!” scene. Something to look forward to.

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile For Recruiters (Part 1)

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile For Recruiters (Part 1) Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile For Recruiters (Part 1) 1. Fully complete your LinkedIn Profile LinkedIn clearly states that users with completed profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn  . Its easy to see whether your LinkedIn profile needs more work as LinkedIn   displays a percentage score, indicating level of completeness. So, before you do anything else like installing apps, joining groups, commenting on discussions, check your score and if its way below 100%, you should do some work to update your profile. LinkedIns  idea of a completed profile means that you have included the following information: Your industry and location, An up-to-date current position (with a description), Two past positions, Your education, Your skills (minimum of 3), A profile photo, At least 50 connections 2. Edit Profile URL to Make it More User and SEO Friendly Your public profile is the public version of your LinkedIn   profile and it is this page which appears in search engines, like Google. The standard URL which LinkedIn   gives you contains your name and a lot of numbers which are not reader friendly and according to experts, not SEO friendly. So, adjust your public profile URL so it is as close to your name as possible, e.g. www.linkedin.com/in/firstnamelastname to make it more reader and SEO friendly. 3. Summary; Adopting an Inverted Pyramid Information Structure The LinkedIn summary has more prominence than the profession profile that you might prepare in a resume. Typically, the LinkedIn summary is longer, maybe two or three times the length and is a more fully fledged personal branding statement than the resume profile. Because the LinkedIn summary is longer and contains two or three paragraphs, it needs more structure than the shorter resume profile to create a similar positive effect. Many experts recommend that you adopt the Inverted Pyramid Approach to present your information which is an approach used in journalism to convey information in the most effective way. In short this means that the most newsworthy info should come in the  first paragraph, which is the: Who?, What? When? Where? Why How?, followed by the  Important details in the second paragraph, and Other General Info and Background Info in the third paragraph. The idea of this is that the reader gets a summary in the first paragraph and can leave the summary at that point and still get a good feel for what you are about. 4. Register a Company Profile One thing that I always look for when assessing a candidates LinkedIn profile is a completed company profile, (which is signified by a file icon next to the employer name), as it provides enriching information about the caliber and nature of the employer and their business Unfortunately, many companies dont yet have a company profile and current or former employees of those businesses do not therefore have helpful company profile icons, describing the employer, which I think lessens the impact of their profile. So, if your employer hasnt created a profile, either ask them to create one or simply create one yourself. 5. Attention Grabbing Headline The LinkedIn profiles places a lot of emphasis on the Professional Headline that appears at the top of the profile just below your name. This headline is displayed prominently at the top of the page and also appears in the listings of search results, which means it will be very influential in determining whether a recruiter clicks on your profile or not. So ensure to prepare an accurate but attention grabbing headline to draw in the reader. 6. Install Apps Used well, the LinkedIn apps enrich your profile. Current apps include a WordPress app or Bloglink app which allows you to present your blog on your LinkedIn profile. Only use this if your blog relates to your business and industry. This is not for personal musings. The Slideshare app is great for showcasing personal presentations, that you have given, on your LinkedIn profile. Theres also the  Creative Portfolio app for showcasing creative work in unlimited multimedia formats. They also have a GitHub App so developers can show their headline activity on GitHub. So, I strongly recommend that where appropriate you install apps and enrich your profile. I hope you have found these LinkedIn profile optimization tips useful. Well continue with more LinkedIn profile tips in part two.

The simple reason its pointless to compare yourself with others

The simple reason it's pointless to compare yourself with others The simple reason it's pointless to compare yourself with others Why should we not compare ourselves with others?Because you have no frame of reference.Comparison isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s essential to success and it allows you to mentally “score” your performance compared to your competitors. But if you take it to the extreme, it can become debilitating, demotivating, and soul crushing. The simple reason is that you have no frame of reference. Here’s what I mean.1. You are comparing RESULTS not processesWhen most people compare themselves to others, they are comparing their RESULTS vs. their processes. For example … You compare the amount of money you earn to how much someone else earns You compare your physique to someone else’s You compare someone else’s relationship to yours But you aren’t looking at the CAUSE of their results a.k.a. the processes. If you want to compare yourself to someone else … Do it.But compare your processes not your results. Compare how much time you spend working on your business and how productive you are against how much time your biggest competitor spends and how productively they spend that time. Compare the training program that other people in the gym are following to the training program you follow Compare the WORK that someone else has put into their relationship (counseling, long conversations, reading books etc) to how much WORK you’ve put in. When you do this, you’ll realize that all of the success you desire is achievable if you follow the PROCESSES that others are following to get the results you desire.2. You are comparing your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20Again, when you compare your RESULTS to someone else’s RESULTS, you are only looking at one part of the picture. You have no idea how much time and effort someone else has put into achieving the results you envy. You don’t know what resources they started with, what sort of help they had along the way, or how long it took for them to achieve the results. So instead of ENVYING their results, ask them about the effort they expended to achieve those results.Figure out how long they’ve been in the game. Determine whether or not they had access to special resources. Figure out how much effort they put into getting where they are and THEN use them as a benchmark for your own performance.3. Ultimately the only person that matters is YOUYou can compare yourse lf to other people all day long and it won’t benefit you a damn bit.Instead, compare yourself to who you were yesterday.Because even if you compare the processes. Even if you look at the amount of effort that other people have put in… You still have no frame of reference. You don’t know what it’s like to be them. You don’t know what really motivates them. You don’t know the whole story (and you never will). So stop worrying about what other people are doing and focus on YOU.Because that’s the only way you’ll improve.Instead of wasting your valuable time comparing yourself to other people, ask yourself the simple question, “How can I become a better man or woman than the man or woman I was yesterday? How can I improve by 1% today?”Because that’s where real power is unlocked.I hope this helpsStay Grounded AndrewThis post first appeared on Quora.

Customize Your Resume for That Plum Job

Customize Your Resume for That Plum Job Customize Your Resume for That Plum Job With resumes, there’s no such thing as one size fits all; know where, how and why to tweak, advises resume pro Steve Burdan. Is it worth it to tailor your resume for every job application?Considering that the applicant tracking systems that automatically screen your resume are calibrated for every job posting, yes.But how much customization does your master resume need for every job application and where is it best applied?Steve Burdan, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders, uses a hybrid resume format for his clients â€" a cross between a functional resume that focuses on a job seeker’s skills and a chronological resume that focuses on a chronological account of a job seeker’s work history. Burdan’s hybrid version includes a profile, an objective title, a branding statement and a bulleted list of areas of expertise as well as a chronological listing of job/position descriptions.Burdan counsels his clients to leave the chronological portion alone but cu stomize the functional section at the top. In this section, he advises clients to mirror the job specs of the targeted position as much as possible.“I tell my clients, ?No resume is ever one size fits all.’ You shouldn’t expect your resume or your cover letter to be one size fits all. You have to expend the energy to customize the documents,” he said.Customization comes down to tweaking the top half, including both the functional section and the job title, to match keywords found in the job listing itself.“If they look at Ladders or the ‘New York Times’ or the ‘Wall Street Journal‘ and see a job opening with the actual job specs, they should glean through it to comb out 10 to 20 keywords. Glean key action words that the potential employer is using, and make sure those 10 to 20 words are sprinkled in the top half of the resume.”The benefits are twofold: First, customization gives job candidates a sense of traction and the feeling that they’re active and engaged in the process of job hunting, Burdan said.Second, it puts them ahead of the competition.“When a client reads your resume over some other, they’ll nod their head a lot more with yours than theirs,” he said. “They’ll be looking at what they’re looking for.”
