The scale was created to highlight which universities are making a concerted effort to recruit low-income students, based on the number of current students who receive Pell Grants. Eric Barth, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, would like to change that. Those drugs have the possibility of being debilitating mentally, he says. Image: Vanderbilt University The surgery to treat the condition also has its own risks. Beginning at the base of the skull, neurosurgeons probe through nerves until they reach the hippocampus. For about 70 percent of seizures, it comes from neural instability, so when you treat epilepsy surgically, they remove the hippocampus part of the brain, Barth says. You figure out whether its the right or left part [causing the seizures] and its an invasive surgery where you drill a hole in the side of the skull. Recovery time alone with this surgery can be a couple months. We wanted to find a way to avoid it. The solution Barths team came up with was to go through the patients cheek, using a robot-assisted surgical procedure. For You: This Years Top 5 Innovative Medical Technologies Once inside the patients cheek, their procedure involves locating a structure called the foramen ovale and sneaking up to the brain with a steerable needle under MRI guidance, he says. We want to see where the needle is going under the image and guide that needle to the middle of the hippocampus. Then you heat the end of the needle up, he says. That way, instead if removing the hippocampus, you try to treat the patient through heating. The procedure is guided by MRI, so the team needed to design a robot that was MRI compatible. Likewise, to have a robot inside the scanner with you, that robot cant be made out of metals and motors and certain sensors. Because of this, we made our robot all out of plastic. Prof. Eric Barth, Vanderbilt University For MRI, they ask you to remove everything thats metal because the magnetic fields are huge and you cant have anything metallic in there because it can obscure the image, he says. Likewise, to have a robot inside the scanner with you, that robot cant be made out of metals and motors and certain sensors. Because of this, we made our robot all out of plastic and it uses these inflatable bellows where you control it with air. You use this robot to steer the needle into the hippocampus and go to the back end of it as they steer. Then you can see everything on the scanner. The robot is shaped like two toilet paper roll-sized objects. One rotates a needle helicallya corkscrew-style way inand the second needle is in back. The researchers have verified that the robot doesnt interfere with the scanner and that theres accurate placement with the needle, he says. In addition, Will Grissom, assistant professor in biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt, has developed techniques in scanning protocols in order to image the needle with the MRI. We see the needle as it comes in and, as you retract the needle, you stick something out of the end of it called the ablater, and you use laser energy and heat up that tissue, Grissom says. Though many of us often didn’t side with Ross (they were not on a break!) it was hard to believe that someone could hate such a popular brand with such affordable prices for oversized throw pillows.In arguably one of the best episodes of the hit show, Rachel comes to a head with the aforementioned Phoebe as she tries to decorate their apartment only to realize her roommate doesn’t want anything that isn’t completely authentic, as in not from Pottery Barn. As you can guess, hilarity ensues. And yes, the apothecary table, which was perfect for holding Rachel’s 300 CDs (so tablets now I guess? Or whatever the robots are using to steal our thoughts) is part of the collection as are Central Perk mugs and throw pillows.It isn’t clear if couches will be a part of this collection but if they are you know there will be several reenactments of the “PIVOT!” scene. So, before you do anything else like installing apps, joining groups, commenting on discussions, check your score and if its way below 100%, you should do some work to update your profile. LinkedIns  idea of a completed profile means that you have included the following information: Your industry and location, An up-to-date current position (with a description), Two past positions, Your education, Your skills (minimum of 3), A profile photo, At least 50 connections 2. Edit Profile URL to Make it More User and SEO Friendly Your public profile is the public version of your LinkedIn   profile and it is this page which appears in search engines, like Google. The standard URL which LinkedIn   gives you contains your name and a lot of numbers which are not reader friendly and according to experts, not SEO friendly. So, adjust your public profile URL so it is as close to your name as possible, e.g. www.linkedin.com/in/firstnamelastname to make it more reader and SEO friendly. 3. Summary; Adopting an Inverted Pyramid Information Structure The LinkedIn summary has more prominence than the profession profile that you might prepare in a resume. Typically, the LinkedIn summary is longer, maybe two or three times the length and is a more fully fledged personal branding statement than the resume profile. Because the LinkedIn summary is longer and contains two or three paragraphs, it needs more structure than the shorter resume profile to create a similar positive effect. The idea of this is that the reader gets a summary in the first paragraph and can leave the summary at that point and still get a good feel for what you are about. 4. Register a Company Profile One thing that I always look for when assessing a candidates LinkedIn profile is a completed company profile, (which is signified by a file icon next to the employer name), as it provides enriching information about the caliber and nature of the employer and their business Unfortunately, many companies dont yet have a company profile and current or former employees of those businesses do not therefore have helpful company profile icons, describing the employer, which I think lessens the impact of their profile. So, if your employer hasnt created a profile, either ask them to create one or simply create one yourself. 5. Attention Grabbing Headline The LinkedIn profiles places a lot of emphasis on the Professional Headline that appears at the top of the profile just below your name. This headline is displayed prominently at the top of the page and also appears in the listings of search results, which means it will be very influential in determining whether a recruiter clicks on your profile or not. So ensure to prepare an accurate but attention grabbing headline to draw in the reader. 6. Install Apps Used well, the LinkedIn apps enrich your profile. Current apps include a WordPress app or Bloglink app which allows you to present your blog on your LinkedIn profile. Only use this if your blog relates to your business and industry. This is not for personal musings. The Slideshare app is great for showcasing personal presentations, that you have given, on your LinkedIn profile. You are comparing RESULTS not processesWhen most people compare themselves to others, they are comparing their RESULTS vs. their processes.For example … You compare the amount of money you earn to how much someone else earns You compare your physique to someone else’s You compare someone else’s relationship to yours But you aren’t looking at the CAUSE of their results a.k.a. the processes.If you want to compare yourself to someone else … Do it.But compare your processes not your results. Compare how much time you spend working on your business and how productive you are against how much time your biggest competitor spends and how productively they spend that time. Compare the training program that other people in the gym are following to the training program you follow Compare the WORK that someone else has put into their relationship (counseling, long conversations, reading books etc) to how much WORK you’ve put in. When you do this, you’ll realize that all of the success you desire is achievable if you follow the PROCESSES that others are following to get the results you desire.2. You are comparing your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20Again, when you compare your RESULTS to someone else’s RESULTS, you are only looking at one part of the picture.You have no idea how much time and effort someone else has put into achieving the results you envy.You don’t know what resources they started with, what sort of help they had along the way, or how long it took for them to achieve the results.So instead of ENVYING their results, ask them about the effort they expended to achieve those results.Figure out how long they’ve been in the game.
